|Whitstable welcomed 23 boats to its annual Silver Tiller meeting on 18/19 June. Three races were scheduled for Sunday following two longer races on Saturday making the Silver Tiller event a 5 race series for the first time at the club. |
Conditions on Saturday were testing with a shifty northerly giving just enough pressure to surf on the waves downwind. At the end of a challenging day Olly Turner and Graham Sexton in "Wild Card" were in the box seat with a fourth and a first.
Although the forecast for Sunday was for very light winds competitors were greeted by a Force 3 westerly. Chris Gould and Chris Kilsby in their new boat "Peer Pressure" won the first race, with Chris Jennings and Pete Horn second in "Bernard". Conditions became more frisky for the second race, with a building Whitstable chop as the tide turned. Gains were to be made by not flying a spinnaker on the tight first reach and this is where Chris Gould took David Winder and Pippa Taylor to record his second bullet of the day.
The last race was won by William and Alex Warren in "Robert" from Tim Fells and Oli Wells. Chris Gould was third thus ensuring his overall win, both for the Holden Cup and the Silver Tiller and the Melbourne Cup for the best results on Sunday.
So ended a great weekend enjoyed by all. A straw poll in the changing rooms deemed the 5 race format a success which will hopefully be repeated next year. Great credit, and thanks, go to the PRO, Huw Reynolds, and the race team for quick turnarounds and accurate courses.
