I am trying to identify the mast on my boat. I had thought it was Chipstow (has a sticker on the front) but now wonder if this was added when it was painted white.
What are the defining features of the different masts?
Mast head fitting and taper of top section, fittings, twill under the paint (Chipstow or Seldon), carbon/alloy track, weight, stiffness.
Have you a picture?
As Miles comments, it should be fairly easy to identify from a picture. A few of the Chipstow masts were finished with white paint from new.
Hopefully I have attached link to picture of mystery mast... Chipstow sticker... but is it? Looking for a new mainsail so need to know what mast section I am buying for!
Alan, the mast foot is same and the lowers and puller are the same as the Chipstow mast I repaired.
You might check what fittings are on it by comparing with the photos of my repair

I'm now having a problem with my main halyard which keeps getting 'jammed' with the sail up... inspection at the business end (by peering through the sail slot) has identified some sort of defunct halyard locking system up there that has been blanked off..... this may be causing the problem as there is a random crimp on the halyard 6 inches from the shackle stop.
We want to take the wire out and replace with Dyneema but we would need to remove the Halyard Lock to create enough space for the extra width/splice.
Q: D you reckon we can we take the halyard lock out without damaging the integrity of the tip or does this need a professional structural assist?
Your boat came new with a Proctor Carbon Mast which Andy Jones replaced with a Chipstow. If it is still the original mast he put on it then it is a chipstow.
Alan the removal of a halyard lock should be fairly straightforward and shouldn't affect the structural integrity of the mast as it is an add on. I would also check that the wheel and pin of the halyard sheave are not worn (frequent) as this adversely affects the free running of the main halyard particularly when the halyard has been loaded up.

The other thing to check with the Chipstow mast is that the halyard isn't coming off the block at the top. On our boat the halyard sometimes goes down the side of this.

I have a halyard lock, Superspars one I think, in the top of my Chepstow rig.
You can easily run a dyneema halyard through it.
Use 2.5mm SK99 dyneema. I have some of you want a length...
Why not use the halyard lock? It works very well on my Chipstow mast although does need a little maintenance every month or so. As recommended by AJ, the trick is just to give the crimp a rub over with a candle.
