Free to a good home: Hobbit, MR 2245

I have looked over the boat, it does require some work as has been stored in a front garden for a few years. The GRP hull looks to be in good condition. I understand the boat is complete with sails, boom, mast and fittings. She also has a road trailer and fitted cover. Sadly, although the boat has had a cover over it, there has been some water ingress on the topsides of the stern. This has caused delamination and will need repair / replacement before the boat is returned to the water. It is probably best to assume that the stern will also require repair, if not replacement too. The rest of the boat looks to have survived well and has potential to be returned to the water. However if this was not possible she could be of interest for the sum of her parts.

My friend will be moving house in the next few weeks and cannot take the boat with him. Sadly it will be disposed of if a new home cannot be found. Do you think one of your club members might be interested in rehoming.

The boat is located in LB Bromley (Kent). Easily accessible from M25.

Being relatively local, I went to see this boat today.

Untouched for 20 years.  It is indeed a GRP hull which looks in very good condition. The side decks have suffered though and will need to be replaced - foredeck and transom would scrub up in my view.

There was some optimistic infilling of the rear quarter with foam which would need to be removed, apparently some also in the front bouyancy tank.

All other parts are present including a Proctor gold mast and boom, complete rudder, some random sails, and an old trailer which had new tyres 15 years ago but the state of roadworthyness is unknown.

The people letting her go are lovely and they are keen to see Hobbit re-homed before mid-December.

There are pictures of a sister ship on the Merlin Rocket Revival Fleet Facebook page - search 'GRP' and scroll down to the post about Tumbler.

Hi,

Hobbit's new owners here. So our project begins! Neither of us have done anything like this before. I tend to do all the boat work on the RS800 I crew and my brother has done some woodwork. So, everyone's progress photos on their Merlin's are going to be a huge help, as well as this forum no doubt.

Quick question. The slot gasket. I've replaced a few in my time but only production boats (RS200, RS500 etc). Are there just a thing as pre made slot gaskets or do you buy the materials and cut it to size?

Thank you!

Just buy the gear and cut it to size dude. There is a lot of scope for variation in the Merlin fleet...
