A few questions before we can answer
Whats your budget
What would be your sailing weights
Where would you want to sail
Have you ever sailed a Merlin

All these will help people to sort out some good suggestions

Whats your budget? - For a starter boat Budget is under £3000. Am pretty skilled, I'm a rigger and also have lots of boat builder mates.

What would be your sailing weights? - Heavy around 26ish stone all up. until brutal fitness regime kicks in better.

Where would you want to sail? - Interested in racing at our local club to start with, our club has a couple of Merlins and I know the crew, then a few open meetings next year. Hopefully looking to do more and more as our skills progress.

Have you ever sailed a Merlin? - Yes sailed them quite a bit but about fifteen years ago.

Skimbleshanks 3474 had quite a good record - you could look at 3508 for something reckoned to carry a bit more weight, Empi 3501 is a bit over your budget, but might be open to negotiation, FS boats from Jon Turner are still competitive if updated & sailed well.

Any further suggestions are very welcome.

I am not in a rush, I want the right boat for the right price.

Not sure where you sail but wembley has an excellent plastic nsm 2 which you would be very welcome to sail at the club. It's not for sale but would give you an idea of a good inland boat

Email mroa treasurer if you are interested

Megan that is a very kind suggestion, thank you. Unfortunately I'm on the south coast and lucky to get away this time of year.

I work as a rigger, lots of boats to fix and splices to make.

If anyone happens to hear anything at the Nationals of good boats for sale please let me know... I have now seen a few boats and have two in mind but still interested to see more before purchasing the right one.
