Glyn Charles was tragically lost in the 1999 Sydney Hobart race. Each year friends and acquaintances invite dinghy sailors from around the country to compete in the Glyn Charles Memorial Pursuit Race, held in Chichester Harbour.
Competing in (or simply watching!) the race is an enjoyable way to honour Glyn, sail around his beloved Chichester harbour, raise money for charity, and have a great chance to win one of many generous prizes. This year's race is on 11 June. As usual we have a generous array of prizes to be distributed throughout the fleet of finishers, and the pile is steadily increasing! Pledges so far (in no particular order) include:
2* days sailing with Conrad Humphreys on his Open 60.
6 * £ 100 Gill vouchers
2 * Volvo Ocean race jackets
A pair of Scott skis
20 Holt Goody bags
A Jeroboam of Mumm Champagne
Something from Musto
Something from Tacktick
A signed book from Debra Veal (Rowing it Alone)
5 * Daily Sail subscriptions
5 * Seahorse subscriptions
Rick Tomlinson Calendars
Kangol hats
A day's on the water coaching from Mark Rushall
Last year, William Warren and Robbie Sampson brought their Merlin Rocket for the first time: they finished 2nd, won a weekend break, and had such a good time that the event is now in the Merlin Rocket calendar!
For 2005 PRO Greg Wells has incorporated some of the improvements suggested by last year's competitors, including a lead boat to help visitors find their way, an extra high tide to enable exploitation of all the creeks of the harbour, multiple mark finishing, and, most important, a party in the evening, supported by the event's charity, the John Merricks Trust.
