And that for as long as I can remember (I first sailed there in 1964 although I only joined in about 1982 after I moved to SW London)there has been a cut-out in that edge at gunwhale height to gain another couple of inches; I measured it once and seem to remember that the maximum distance between the cutouts was 7'3""..."

Wing mirrors can be fitted as long as they don't project beyond the skin.. Go for it!
