"I always thought the 'fable' was that 2.2metres/7ft2ins was the maximum towing width. Whatever, it is 2.2 metres in the rules and that includes any wing mirrors."

Even better news - we could increase the maximum width up to 2.55metres following the changes in 2010 to the towing regs to 'bring us in line with Europe'!!\r\n\r\nAnyone up for an extra 35cm ??

"Or - if the Merlin fable is accurate - as wide as can be fitted through the doors of Ranelagh SC's boathouse!\r\n\r\nIt's interesting to note that those doors open past 90 degrees, which means that the inside corner on the hinge side starts to come back into the opening between them. And that for as long as I can remember (I first sailed there in 1964 although I only joined in about 1982 after I moved to SW London)there has been a cut-out in that edge at gunwhale height to gain another couple of inches; I measured it once and seem to remember that the maximum distance between the cutouts was 7'3""..."

Wing mirrors can be fitted as long as they don't project beyond the skin.. Go for it!

"Brilliant - then I could fit wing mirrors, to them add forwards and backwards control lines - double these for each side and YES.. more lovely string to play with. Saves all that looking backwards wondering where the rest of the fleet have gone...!"

"Well 7'2"" is 2184mm, so if it's 2200mm in the rules there's 5/8th of an inch we never knew we had."
