Any advice on removing 2-pack varnish? Wickes paint and varnish stripper won't touch it. I only have a small area to do but I don't want to risk going through the ply with over enthusiastic sanding!

I have tried using strippers but they just don't work. I use a heat gun and scraper and pass over a couple of times. it seems to almost melt the varnish.

The only way is a good hot air gun and a tungsten scraper, Bahlco will strip it in minutes

+1 for the hot air gun and tungsten scraper - can be slow if you don't want to fry the veneer, but always works for me. I'm intrigued by Jez and the use of lazy strippers to remove varnish, but why not?

They are not lazy, just won't touch the boat. They have other things on their mind............Like dancing!!

Looks like I need a heat gun. Don't know how I've managed without one all these years! Thanks for the advice folks.

I used Nitromors to strip 2pack poly varnish from inside of boat and deck. Work well but needs time to work and several applications. Much easier than heat gun and no damage.

little tip with nitromors - put in on and cover with tinfoil. Have several cups of tea, come back and put some more on again covering with foil. After several more cups of tea and visits to the WCs you should find that the varnish is lifting. The foil stops the nitromors drying out.
Nitromors unfortunately is a shadow of it's former self, and chuffing expensive.

Hi I have posted this some time ago, but I used Peelaway Poultice Paint removal System, which is a paste that you put on the old two pack varnish on top of this you have a what they call a special blanket which looks like clear plastic almost like thicker cling film, this stops the past drying out, I left this on my deck over night. Result the old varnish came of very easily . This product is available from Rest Express Unit 1, Springfield farm, Perrotts Brook, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 7DT Tel 01285 831668.
