Topic : Max sail area

Any technical experts out there who can answer what might be a simple question ? I have an NSM 3 which according to the design guide is very close to an NSM 2 but with slightly more weight carrying capacity. The total sail area is 9.9 metres. If it supposed to carry more weight why is the sail area not at maximium, in fact what is "normal" sail area?

It probably is maximum, it's just that you get a better shape bu using unmeasured sail area to get the sails larger than you do by getting the area up to 10.2 measured and then using what unmeasured area you can.

It's more about getting the shape right within the measurements than getting the measurements to suit the shape if you see what i mean.

Have a look at the formula in the rules linking sail area to mast height. As your rig gets taller the sail area is reduced to compensate. You only get 10.2 sq m if you have a minimum height rig.

This might seem a little to obvious but measurers are still mere mortals if you have the time give them your new main built to what you believe is the latest shape/style etc, etc, When they signed it off get your jib made to bring your area to max. We had various designs on computer and adjusted the luff curves to suit each spar/set up consequetly the 'area' of the main was not always the same. With non rigged rules you have the oportunity to 'tweak' the jib although as Lord sod states it'll make no differance to most.Less than one bad tack! Barry.

Sorry Chris, you have lost me completely here....

For a 5720 mast the 'normal sail area' is 9.96 sqm as calculated from the formula in Rule 9. This is 'normally' distributed 7.16sqm for the main and 2.8sqm for the jib.

If you went for a longer mast the sail area would be smaller (just try feeding a number into the formula if you don't believe me!).

Oh, and Happy New Year and a slightly less successful season than me, to everybody!

I was theorising that perhaps it might be a more efficiant shape to have the sails slightly smaller than maximum size, and didn't really describe it very well due to only having about 2 minuites to type it in!

In all the yachting press the Merlin area is given as 10.2 max, it hadn't occured to me that this might be with any rig other than that which we are using today.

Seems i'd lost myself as well.......... never mind it doesn't take much!!
