I heard at a party on Saturday night that Roger Gilbert is to join the fleet with James Stewart crewing. He should make a dent!

If true, which I hope it is, just proves once more the 400 is slowly on the demise!
If you want to be a part of the best you have to sail a Merlin.

Think that is a little harsh. Don't think he has been in a 400 for years but even so just because someone fancies a change does not mean a class is dying. 400s cater for a different market and if you weigh 25 stone and want assymentric upwind/downwind courses and to go very quick it is a good option. I think the 400 class has stabilised at around 60-65 boats for the nationals and 30-45 for opens which is quite healthy for a double hander - similar size to the lark, scorpion and merlin. The merlin offers something very different to the 400 although the hull design is related to a 10 year old merlin design.

I sailed against Roger at Frensham when we were but whippersnappers. Last thing I saw his name in was SB3s and Ents.
I spoke to another Cadet pal, Paul Hilliar, the other night, trying to convince him to defect from the RS400s...but to no avail.
