Topic : NSM4 Stern Tank

Has anyone modded the stern tank on a Rowsell NSM4 to assist drainage in any way?

I've seen a hoare NSM4 with two plasic drain tubes and small transom flaps but don't know if it worked or not.

Getting them leakproof could prove interesting though.

Jon,
I put a couple of white plastic drain pipes through the stern tank of a plastic NSM II I had. Pictures at http://www.nickprice.org.uk/boats.htm

Brian Cobb has cut the stern tank from 3316 (a Summer Wine I think) cutting the wooden tank almost to the floor of the hull, adding a filler piece to the transom which had a large cutout above the level of the tank, adding flaps to the stern, and adding bags.

We have 3361 which was I think the first NSM4, built by Jon Turner. It has bags and flaps from new; if a few photos would help you please let me know

Cutting the tank out is a little drastic really, and it must be remembered it's a very strutural part of the boat!

Only recommended if the tank is badly holed.

No, tank not holed. although some nutcase did put additional bags on it which required some axtra ugly wood being glued to it.

2 Problems are....

1) Boat never really drains when we park it up - even if I leave it level, water collects around the bailers and doesn't drop through.
2) When we have a bad tack in heavy weather and lug a load of wet stuff in, it takes a while to clear thru the bailers and the tranny flaps.

Probably won't go for major surgery - I don't want to end up having a tearful phone call to phil scott.

I think Phil put the tubes in the Hoare NSM IV.

That would certainly solve the dinghy park drainage problem.

3405. I had Phil Scott put pipe and plugs through the tank. Just helped drain the water but did not help self bail after capsize.

My NSM2 had stern pipes which did not help drain when stood but it emptied like a shoot after capsize!
