Topic : Cafbon Fibre Boom

Trying to source some carbon fibre tubing for a boom. Anyone know wall thickness? Also would you expect extra reinforcement to gooseneck end?

A company called C2marine used to do a nice carbon boom tube for home completion but I don't see it on their website now. Maybe they've dropped it, but it might be worth an email to [email protected] to check.

The problem with tube that you buy off the shelf is that it the layup and the way it's made won't be designed for use a boom. To cut a long story short it will bend enormously and probably break without extra layers along most of it's length. By the time you've done that a new one may not seem so expensive!

Mike, you are quite correct and I have a C2 boom to go onto the new look Thunderclap for the nationals...

Like all C2 products they are made from a mix of carbon and kevlar. Again as with all C2 products they are "designed" to do the intended job so although the section is round on the outside the internal shape is very slightly oval to make it as stiff as possible whilst also as light as possible...

If anyone is interested give me a call. Or I'll be at the Inlands this weekend with the van...
might even take the boom with me in case anyone wants to take a look at it...!

I've found another carbon company on the web - Carbonology.com
They appear to do lots of bits for many purposes, including "spinnaker poles for dinghies" and tubes of all sorts.
I agree with other posts about plain tube though - make sure it is man enough for the job, not spaghetti bollock knees.
Has anyone ever tried the bottom bit of a windsurfer broken mast. Should be in the right ball park for strength.

Sorry Richard it's still in dry dock. Will sort some pictures once it's done though. I'm afraid the inside is being painted but the decks will receive new gunwales and epoxy/varnish....new carbon mast, boom and trolley...oh and some new(ish) sails!

Re booms I spoke to Terry Cooke at BCYC over the last weekend and he's just left Gill to start Aardspars (his son Mike runs Aardvark who build the 12s and moths...) They've developed an oval boom section which he said was very light and very stiff... zero7972 735607

carbonology belongs to a sailor - dave chisholm - he knows his stuff when it comes to carbon and sails pretty well these days but the business mainly focuses on products outside the marine industry (as its more profitable). i'm sure if you give dave a call he will be delighted to give any help and advice.

"Has anyone ever tried the bottom bit of a windsurfer broken mast......." Yes, I have. It was a 10 myear old carbon mast with the very top part broken. I used the bottom half and added a couple of layers of glass cloth and epoxy resin; all beautifully layed up with peel ply and love and attention - and all totally useless. As soon as I put any kicker tension on the thing bent (like it was originally designed to do......). I then put an advert on the forum for a second hand boom and bought a slightly damaged one which I repaired and is as stiff as a post! The attempt with the windsurfer mast was NOT one of my better home construction moments.
