Topic : Polishing FRP Gelcoat boat

I have an FRP boat (let's just pretend it's a Merlin)

It has been suggested that I rub it down with 1200 grit and run it over with a car body polisher. Is this a good idea and should I rent a buffer to do it with, also, what kind of polish would be best? Could I mess my boat up?

You can buy buffers for around a 10 now...Hardly seems worth hiring...
