Well!!!! I knew that the Merlin a was development class but now this. Must get into the shed and look out those heat shield tiles I'd been saving all these years. I assume that for re-entry we will have to mount the spinnaker over the stern to float gently down. Wish I had re-decked with thicker ply to take the booster rocket mountings. Will my crew get sucked into the engines. Will I get roasted with the after burners. So many problems to face - and some people are just discussing the merits of carbon!!!!!!!!!!!

Helpful Sailor, I am deeply impressed by the breadth of your knowledge and interests.

You don't happen to know anyone who is into code or cypher-breaking do you? Not because I want to understand the Yoof forum, but I have inherited a notebook of 18th century shorthand. For all I know it may tell me the secrets of eternal life or even how to tune my boat better.

Try Simon Sing author of the Code Book and Fermat's Last Thorem, both worth reading if you are that way inclined.

I think he is the sort of guy that would love to help you solve your puzzle.

Bill - one of my ancient relatives invented the "Gurney Shorthand" about that time. Used primarily in the House of Commons - I have a copy of it all somewhere if you are really intent on transcribing it. Doubt it will have much info on rockets in it

Thanks for both of these suggestions. In fact I've compared it with Gurney already from 'A History of British Shorthand', clear evidence that there are even sadder anoraks than us around.

I'll follow up the Simon Singh contact.

Have a good New Year
