Topic : Merlin Gooseneck

Afternoon Folks, just a quick one. I run a Chipstow (last varient in case goosenecks changed) mast and have been running a Chipstow boom. I am in the process of changing to a Seldon boom. The spigot hole has gone from 11.5 mm (Chipstow)  down to 9.5 mm (Seldon). As I do not want to drill any more holes in the mast, question is what spigot are others running as the one that seems to be on offer is Seldon part No. 528-086-09, but this has an acetal or like component within it. Alternative is to change to an all Stainless one, which will mean we'll not be able to interchange booms without changing gooseneck or adding a carbon sleeve. Thoughts/experiences of the Seldon goosenecks appreciated

Hi Mark.

Apply drill to inboard end of boom

Problem solved

Chris, the problem is the acetal/plastic material is a honeycomb and the wall will then be to thin as would be reduced by 25%. Might just get some spigots machined in SS to replicate the Chipstow spigot but 9.5 mm, as a bit concerned about the plastic swivel which we'd probably break is breeze. Sure others have or will come across this issue

Hi Mark,

If you’re interested in selling the old chipstow boom once you’ve made the switch to selden let me know,

Cheers,

Chris

Turn the alloy fitting down in a lathe.

Hi Mark.

Mine was fine drilled out for over three years.

I drilled mine out for the Superspars gooseneck.   When I broke the boom last year it was not the inboard end that failed.  In fact I think I used a rat-tail file and kept going till I could just get the gooseneck on.  Job done.

Hi Mark, Seems an odd move - isn't the selden quite a bit heavier than the chipstow, why would you want to change?

I glued a piece of carbon tube to the inside of my new boom to fit the chipstow goose neck, so far so good !
