MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Second hand sails query

I have recently bought an old plastic NSM2 with metal spars for pottering around the back of the fleet on the river at UTSC with my 10 year old daughter who is new to sailing. The existing mainsail needs replacing and after looking at various websites and the MROA Forum, concluded that sail selection appears to be a bit of a science and possibly needs to be matched to the rig.
Whilst at this stage I would prefer to buy second-hand, I contacted 3 sail lofts for advice and one just suggested that I change my rig for carbon (not an option). This got me thinking whether second-hand sails advertised through MROA For Sale pages would be suitable / compatible for my rig and whether sail material, cut, age, etc. really makes a difference for my novice ability, location and expected (light) winds?

Thanks for any advice

We should be able to assist with a second hand sail cut for an ally rig.

Cheers

Hi David,

I have a garage full of sails from both carbon and Ali rigs which I am planning to sell off fairly cheaply. I used to have an old Plastic NSM2 and I suspect it is the one you have, 3446 Sacre Bleu?

I used to sail it at Cookham (my home Club) and she went well. I had a laminate sail on her which was actually off a Carbon Rig but looked good enough. After she left our club someone bought another set of sails and painted her decks pepermint (they were grey).

Hi Jeremy,

Yes, 3446, Sacre Bleu. Now at UTSC and still light blue decks (pictured at UTSC Merlin open).

I'm currently abroad but will chat when I get back.

Also, the sail loft that advised me to change to carbon rig had me confused with another customer. ;o)
