MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Tony Hewitt

Very sadly Tony passed away over Easter - many will remember him from his BCYC days where he not only sailed his own Merlin but for many years crewed for Jeff Worsdale in 'Concerto'. Details of the funeral will be posted when known.

I am Tony's son and I am posting this message on behalf of myself and his daughter, Rebecca Hewitt. We are so pleased that he is remembered by the Merlin Rocket fraternity, we both know how much he enjoyed sailing with many of you.

All are welcome at the funeral, we look forward to meeting you, we are just sorry it will be under such sad circumstances.

If anyone has any stories or memories of our Dad we would love to hear them. Please feel free to post them on this forum or contact us by email: [email protected].

I spent a lot of time with Tony over the last few months and he was a regular visitor to us in Somerset in the Autumn of 2008. Despite his recent ill health he always maintained his sense of humour: we spoke at length about the old Merlin Rocket days, the characters we had sailed with and the friends he knew. He will be sadly missed by Lyndy and I and our family and , I am sure, that many others will miss him also.

I did not know Tony during his Merlin Rocket days but sailed with him for many years after that.

Some 20 years or so ago Tony, Jeff Worsdale and I were part of the crew regularly racing a boat called Monochrome on the Solent in Cowes week, Round the Island, Lymington Cup etc.

The owner was superstitious about people wearing “green” on board, so one day in Cowes Week Tony decided that it would be a good idea if we ignored this.

So the following morning the owner was met with the sight of the crew all lined up on the side decks neatly kitted out in brand new green sailing trousers.

We went on to win the race that day and to win the class championship during that week.

Coincidentally on Friday it will be 16 years to the day that Tony was Best Man at my wedding, but as Tony and Jeff came as a pair in those days I ended up with two “Joint Best Men”

Pam and I will always have fond memories of Tony and he will be greatly missed.

I had the great fortune of knowing Tony going back to the days when he was sailing with Jeff Worsdale at Salcombe and watching them running against the ebb whilst trying to light fags ! was good sport. Later Tony sailed with us on our Selection 37 Tidechase and not only bought his extensive knowledge which he relayed in a very quiet manner but was also very good company. It was a privalage to know Tony and he will be sorely missed. Our condolences go to Tom and Rebecca and all his family. Steve and Angela Best and family.

I have many good memories of sailing with tony. I first met him at bcyc when I sailed an old m/r and then Ents.Later we sailed with Chris Hurst on Monochrome (see above)-always fun! I usually bumped into tony at Dartmouth Regatta. We used to kid ourselves that we still looked just the same!My sincere condolancies to Tony,s family. Can,t make Friday I'm afraid.Mike Bennett
