Topic : Spinnaker Halyard

After some advice please.

I am currently restoring MR908 (slow process but getting there). I does not have a spinnaker chute and will be reliant on retreaving spinnaker to bags/tray. All the Merlins I have ever owned have always had the current hoist/lowering system of halyard existing mast round c/board case and attached to retreaval patch with spinnaker brought through chute. How does the system work when bringing the Spinnaker back to bags similar to Fireball etc? Is it the same principle?

Many thanks in advance.

Richard

Richard, in my old MR1890 before I put in a shute, there was no down haul, all the crew did was to man handle it into bags either side of the mast. I always tried to think of when I would be next launching the kite and have it stowed on the leeward side for easier launching.

....and when bringing it in to leeward make sure it comes in under the jib sheet !!

The tail end of the halyard is just loose I believe....but tying it onto something will prevent a tangle. On GP14s and ICs they use a pump system if you want the helm to raise the spinny one-handed.

My carpentry is pretty poor so I got ARP to put it in when they still made Merlins, which is why you got 2601 to have a go at putting back together.

I'll stick with the bags, only makes more work retro fitting chutes! Certainly will be able to restore 2601 just a long way off yet!

BTW dropped boom off at Lauries last night in case you hadn't picked up my email.

Cheers

Richard
