Several websites (including Whitstable YC - www.wyc.org see Forum for background and details) have picked up the proposal that could lead the RNLI having to pay prohibitive license fees for their radios.
I spoke to the Whitstable RNLI and asked whether there really might be a problem or whether this was a storm in a teacup. They said definitely yes, there could be a problem and asked us all to petition Gordo at No10. That rather appealed to me so I did at http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/RNLI-RF-licences/
So please support the RNLI and sign the petition - it is really easy

Also done as it clearly can't do any harm but there's an interesting (ish) thread/link to Ofcom on the lark website which suggests that maybe it will all be ok.... clearly the RNLI at Whitstable are likely to be pretty knowledgable on the subject too and John has discussed it with them.... so I've signed up anyway...nice to get an e-mail from No10 in return too.
Who knows. http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/features/rnliradio

Lets hope it is ok, but think on this A.)When did the RNLI last lie to you? B.)When did a Government agency of any sort last tell you the whole truth? Answer to A = never. Answer to B = usualy. So best to support the petition. As Mark Twain put it:- vote early and vote often!:- (That is if you have several entities you can vote for.)

Done. Easy.
Hard to believe they are still a Charity without any government funding. Hope I never need them, awfully glad they are there.

Several years ago got nobbled at Alexandra Palace as a Shoreline RNLI member, and have paid up ever since. Do not see why my sub should have to go to paying this tax, so have signed up as well.

Just to let you know of progress, when I signed up a week ago there were about 6,000 signatures, now there are close to 13,000.
A reminder, as some of you who think you signed up are NOT, you must click on the link from the e-mail that gets sent to you, or your signature will not count.

It's the phrases 'might actually pay less than they do now' and 'We estimate that they could pay' That are not really responses, just a vague statement to keep us happy while they push it through. Then 'Well actually we underestimated their usage....'
