Aside from the pics on Y&Y, any results? |
Whitworth won without needing the last race, think Gibert was second. Both were supreme in their boat handling. |

For those eager to see the report: |
and better still ......the video! http://www.malcolmdonald.com/hrscmerlinwarmingpan2008.html |
The report says that Gilbert was second but the results table gives him no mention?? |
Only I think in one race of four? The courses were short and not really long enough to sort out the form. This not to detract from the placees. |
Technically no it doesn't, however, does it cause the class any harm? Persoanlly I think it raises the overall profile of the class. CST are a well known mast manufacturer (mostly for 14s) and consequnelty conveys to 'watchers' that the Merlin is still a development class where competitors are allowed/encouraged to try new technologies and designs. |
If technically it doesn't, it doesn't! |
CST on Tom's boat. I will be putting the keyboard into action and forwarding something to Pat this year but this is an example where limited category C would be of benefit to both the sailor, supplier and class association. Staying category A is a very blinkered approach and misunderstanding of how Category C can be applied. If a class is category C the class can stipulate limitations and if done correctly can look great and be very beneficial to the class as a whole. In the B14 we market ourselves as a group and offer up boats as per the Sydney Flying Sqaudron and it has worked briliantly over the last 18 months and is still growing. More on this in the future but a great opportunity and we would be very short sited in saying no without exploring the options. |
Interesting because the ISAF refers to "events" rather than "classes" the implication being you can advertise in events that are nominated as such maybe limited to event sponsors though as with a lot of Yachting Stuff it is not that clear. |
The advertising was not on my boat that would be naughty. Still if it was allowed it would be P&B all over the sails and Gul P&B on the boat. |
If the sailing gear does not comply then don't wear it, that would make the manufacturers comply really quickly there seems little point in having a set of rules if they are not applied. You cannot comply a bit any more than you can be a little bit pregnant! |
Please can someone send me a copy of the full results. |
And me please... |
And, I'd like to add, I think advertising does detract from the aesthetics of the class and I'm not sure Roger's result should stand for the Silver Tiller, if he is indeed breaching ST rules. Anyone? |
A Clear breach of Cat A however if no-one protested...It dowes ruin the aesthetics but then so do those grubby Kevlar/Carbon sails and fat head rigs, not to mention some of outfits people wear - look like skinny bullfrogs. |
Roger's advertising is illegal and he and I spoke about it at Hamble. |
Must say I think that adverts all over dinghies looks terrible. Having your boat design welded onto the plastic like some classes must surely mean that they are so anonymous that they have to let people know what they are (or remind the helms what sort of boat they are sailing). When someone sails a Merlin with no ostentatious adverts everyone knows what they are!! Even this far north (Scotland) I have had people stop outside my house when I have been renovating my 3 Merlins simply because they have recognised the hulls (and they have all been different from one another). The enquiry as to whether it really is a Merlin is generally followed by a wistful "I used to have one of those" or "I always wanted one of those". We don't need to advertise the class openly - the boats do it for us! |
