Topic : Salcombe Week 2008

Okay guys, I'm not trying to put the frightners on but we have a large entry (62) so far and with entries coming in every day I suspect that we will be hitting the 100 boat max with some unlucky people getting put on the waiting list!

The intention is that we will be doing the draw on the morning of Saturday 1st December assuming that there are 100 boats on my list that morning. So to be in the draw we need your entries in.......................

By: John Murrell
Does the draw start from the earlist post to the last post ie 1st Dec, or could the 101 entry on the 1st Dec get a place and an earlier dated entry doesn't.

Can you clarify please?

With the postal service (or rather lack of) we get in Salcombe, I doubt that it will have arrived by the time we do the draw!

My reading of the NOR is that I need entries in BY the 1st December, not ON the 1st.........

how do I know that the post has delivered my entry? Should I have sent one in recorded delivery?

John I may have missed the answer but if my entry is already on you list and you get 110 entries by end November, could I be one of the 10 boats not going? Even if I was one of the first to send in my cheque?

By: Hopeing my accomodation gets used!
From my understanding, it is the first 100 out of the bag on that date.
I sent mine in the week before last and currently have everything that I could find crossed!

I am afraid that Capt. Chaos has hit the nail on the head, its the first 100 out of the bag on the saturday morning.

I suspect that its time to knobble the Salcombe postie - not that it would take much..................

what's wrong with first come first serve?

Firstly, its clear in the notice of race
"Entries for the 37th Salcombe Yacht Club Merlin Rocket Week will be compiled from the first 100 entry forms opened on 1st December 2007. All entries will remain unopened until then. Remaining entries received after the first 100 will be placed on an entry waiting list in order of opening as will entries received after 1st December. Each entry must be sent in a separate envelope"

Secondly, there has to be some cut off date; otherwise some people would put entries in 2 or 3 years in advance before the eveny is even confirmed, taht would be silly; you could make it the first 100 recieved by the date the NOR is published, but that just pushes the cut off to an earlier date.

From practical experience, the Dec 1 date is sensible; from practical experience, the letting agents won't release 'repeat booked' properties to the market until around December, so there is no point knowing you have got an entry in September for instance and not being able to confirm if you have a place to stay, taht is just stressful.

Obviously, those who 'repeat book' don't have a problem and would love to put their entry in and confirm as early as possible. But that would be to the detriment of others who want to experience Salcombe for the first time.

That said, having not come last year, I'd better make my mind up quick! Any one know any good houses to rent, taht allow dogs?

Also as a returning person we had to book and pay a large deposit for the accomadation by 9th Nov, so maybe the date should be brought back to 1st Nov, them if your in them book the house.
coz the missus will be annoyed if I'm not in the first 100, due to loosing the deposit, and missing out on a norway cruise, tell you what I will send her your way.

Was that his personal opinion that you needed to wait 56 days before releasing the entries or they could be released sooner. Speak to an Admiral of the Fleet!!!!!

Sadly Admiral of the Fleet no longer exists as a rank. (The British forces abandoned five star ranks some years back.) I think the man concerned is a Rear Admiral.

My Mum says I am excused the sodomy and I will provide a note on Monday to that effect if it's OK with the lower ranks!! However put me down for the rum and couple nights on the lash!!

Hi John, Will you draw out a hundred or draw out the numbers over a hundred?. If I'm not in the 100 I'll loose my cottage deposit, miss out on a family holiday, infuriate the missus and that little brown envelope for you will not be able to be delivered!!. Surely the draw could be televised somewhere to add some spice to the event. When will the results be known; do you e mail the lucky & unlucky ones?

By: Mike Hamilton
Any chance of an update as to how many entries have been received on a regular basis till the draw? There is always an outside chance there is only 100 entries to draw from?!

I am sure the sheep see it that way ...

I doubt they do, and to be serious a farmer or shepherd is entitled to shoot a sheep chasing sheep, and the owner can be and frequently is prosecuted, if you can wake up your local police station that is. I'll grant you sheep are pretty stupid with a tenuous concept of survival at the best of times, delicious though!

Shoot a sheep chasing a sheep!! As heep follow sheep, most fields would be a blood bath!

By my reckoning there are 82 entrants so far with seven days to go. Could this mean that the proposed nobbling of the Salcombe postie may not be needed or do we keep the sheep on standby? Ermmmm

Only 12 slots left,

Posted: 27/11/2007 08:49:01
By: :-)
Just a question. There seems to be a large number of people booking spaces who do not even own a Merlin. Is this really fair to those of us who have made a significant investment in a boat and the class?
Should I not get a slot is it really worth me paying out all my money on a boat only to miss out on the best event of the year to someone who is going to phone me asking to borrow it?

I know this has always been the case, but given the demand should favor not be given to those who support all the events not just this one?

Does John Harris know he's not entered?

He was waiting to receive his entry form in the time honoured tradition. However, realising his wait was in vain, he has opted to go for a little knee surgery instead.

That is not to say he will not be available for a last minute call-up..

9 places and 4 posts left to go!! Lets hope the postie gets lost on his way!

I am not sure whether curious is serious or not. As some of these "freeloaders" are obviously awaiting the delivery of their new craft and have been supporters of the class for a very long time, I presume following his logic that curious is happy to go to the back the queue.

As long as they are MR Owner Association Full members when they enter as well as when they sail, ( 2 years subs!) boat sourcing is surely up to them.

Unfortunately not a hope........

We did manage to up the numbers from 96 to 100 and were told then that it was the absolute limit - can you really imagine playing 'tag gunwhale' with more than 50 boats on the SYC start line? We keep most of the boatbuilders employed full time as it is!!!!!

I can vouch for that given that I got a prop through a plank this year and then pulled my transom out slightly coming in to Gurston!
