MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Zogg to planet Earth. Help I’ve lost the plot!!

Can the brainy one help? What are the relevant rules here?
This is part of a race report that contains a happening (rare, in a day in the life of Jacko the boat builder! Well was a boat builder)

Monday was a gay day, more sunshine, more wind and a good course had been set starting off the club line; wind over tide N.W.10-14 knots. It must be said that Jacko now with 1 OCS and 2 bad starts was receiving earache from the front-end girl. A request to keep close to the race box down tide on the race course side of the line but never the less well out the way of any one wishing to race, for the purpose of (Jacko to see what the transits actually looked like and a goodly squint at the flag order) was prudent!
As it turns out Andi (Laser) now with a 2,2,3, score line and in 2nd place overall decides to open the proceedings with an attempt to block Jacko’s path back to the pre start side of the line which he carried out with some artistic body language and well articulated bunny pie!
In the following race Jacko and Lorna encountered another attack of Andy’s rendering of pre start Americas Cup (I’d rather sail out the back door than race)

I have looked in the book but failed to find the right reply

Don't race there again and deprive them of your hard earned spondoolies

As there is no proper course before the start then Andi can sail where he likes and really only port and starboard and windward leeward only can come into play.

You are in a Merlin, he is in a Laser!

Tighten up an start beating, bear away and put the kite up a reach back, burn away from him a good distance, stick a gybe in and come back at him at full speed with the kite up on Starboard.

Just an idea (needs a bit of wind to work)

Thanks Al
I have looked again at the rules and the ISAF cases
Given that boat B came looking for boat A out side the start aria 5 minuets before the warning signal pre race 4 and 5. In a less powerful boat, butting he’s 2nd place overall up for grabs
I feel that rule 2 fair sailing, ISAF cases 34.invoking rule 69.1 sportsmanship! Is a real possibility?
PS so sorry to find out you’ve been with the fishes floppy toppy
Love you Jacko

Very disappointed that you did not go for the inadvertant 'T bone' ploy which would have had two advantages
1 - the Laser problem has gone away - sunk
2 - you could quote for the repair job!!

And what is all this about looking in books!!!

Hello Mr P
Well it was a surprise. I have been down the pan for a long time. The laser had not herd the line “if can see Jacko your in the S**t” but he was mustard keen to interfere with me or my crew!! (i have not been interfered with for some time ether) The book struth! But I have the one with pitchers and it comes up with the answer 59 or was it 47? But back to the shed

Before the warning signal? I didn't think people at BSea launched that early??

Before the warning signal - that means no racing rules, but the Internatioanl Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea rules apply: which probably means that the Laser will have to keep clear of you, as you in your shed would be "manouvering with difficulty in a narrow passage" :-)

Ha ha CJ any connection with R Perring?
But not at Bsea but up the river a bit lots of water
If Andi had hit on totty floppy! He mite have well fallen out of he’s tree and who knows what may have happened with floppy’s boat handling skills “one off. Diving!”
And Andi a handy pond sailor! Still had more to loos than he could gain I think it comes back to sportsmanship “definitely cameee!

"On the start line" doesn't help. You are supposed to be "behind the start line"! (But at least you went back and cleared yourself unlike the 400!).

the water was very warm and the fishes very accomodating. It all boiled down to a crewing error (I can safely say that as she does not read this). Craig, are you and the oswald visiting us for our silver tiller? if you are I am going to lay an oyster bed to rasp up your centre board a bit! Oh! forgot to mention Jacko, remember only one merlin did not do the laying down bit during pyefleet week, do want to tell everybody who it was or shall I tell them it was me, even kept it up in the squall.

Hello Alan
Thanks for coming to Brightlingsea on Sunday, sorry I missed you after sailing but Jayne was away and I had to do dinner for 7 kids!!
Best start I have ever seen you make however when you are in front you need to know where the marks are, now was it the crew or the helm who had the course card upside down?? Good luck at the weekend, wish I was going but the Boat Show has got in the way. Are you sure we can't get you to come to Queen Mary?

Jacko

Surely you haven't lost your way round the course again? How well do we remember your minor map reading error at Nobs and Snobs - It's no good sailing fast if you happen to be heading to the wrong mark.

Do they write the courses in Klingon at Brightlingsea as well?

Jules
Let's not forget that our mutual friend used to refer to Starboard as "Mickey Mouse" and Port as "Donald Duck" - it's another layer of confusion which could have come into play had his crew managed to get him sailing the boat towards the right mark. I know it never used to phase Wiggy - but then nothing really phased Wiggy!
