Topic : Single wire system

Everything is off now - and the repairs / refurbishment has started - including work on the ali space frame which I'm going to tig on some additions to improve overall strength -

When I was pulling off the tensioning system for the uppers and lowers on the shrouds and the forestay - it got me thinking how does the single line system on the latest boats work ? I know extra reinforcing is required in older boats but while its bare and the tig torch is out could someone please explain the basics of the single line system -

Thanks

Conor

There was an article in a recent magazine about converting an older Winder to a semi-one-string system. I don't think anyone has done it yet with a wooden boat.

From what i understand it is very hard to do conor, if you search previous threads loads of people have asked about the conversion, i think the link mags has given is the system which Chris has designed which is the closest thing your going to get.

Have Winder patented this system? (Can they?!)

Chris did say that he was going to send some pictures to Mags to support his article.

I for one would be interested in seeing these pictures (if they were ever taken that is.)

Heres hoping !!

I set 3646 up with 2 line control for rake, will be doing the strings this winter for combining vang and lowers adjustment. Basic idea was tested on an Albacore. A vertical traveller and car behind the foot of the mast and down to the hog. Jib Halyard and shrouds attach to traveller, and vertical movement of traveller adjusts rake. You just have to experiment with the purchases as shrouds move a different distance from the halyard.

Will let Mags have some pictures when finished.

Russ, haven't got any pictures but will try and find the original sketches of system and purchases used as a starting point. If you let me have your email address I'll forward them to you.

Another question - does the single line system alter the kicker at the same time - and proportionately?

And does the system maintain the same ratio of tension - that is to say regardless of rake position within the range of adjustment the tension in the upper and lower shrouds vs the tension in the forestay remains constant -

If so thats bl@~dy clever :) -

YES. and yes it is clever ! Must have taken ages to fine tune..

but would you want it to stay the same? adjust it all at once and then retune to new conditions?
