Who won the City of Plymouth trophy this year? (The most important trophy of all!)

In amongst the pile of silverware and glass that William W and Robinson collected was, I guess, the City of Plymouth Trophy.
The yearbook says that it is awarded to the 'leading crew sailing in the same boat throught the Championships' so Chris Robinson is THE MAN.

However I am the only one that can remember a time when it was awarded to the leading crew without a discard? Maybe you can tell us Judge?

Not the only one David Tucker won it in 1965 on that basis and John Faulkner in 1963 probably others but those I can vouch for. Though was it the City of Plymouth Trophy?

Yep that regatta was the reason for the rwriting of the discard rule too.

I remember when there was no discard taken into account when calculating the points for the award of the City of Plymouth Trophy. I was also not aware that the qualification definition had been changed but I admit I haven't been to the championships since Exmouth in 1995.

In response to the Ancient Geek's query as to whether it was the city of Plymouth Trophy in the early 60's, the first year that the Trophy is mentioned in the year books is 1968. That book shows Barry Dunning having won it in 1967 at Poole when Alan and he in Krakatoa finished 2nd in the championships behind David Potter and Dougie Brixton.

There was certainly a CUP (but What is was called In do not recall, it was I always thought "The Crews Trophy" But things change get lost and re-awarded! I THINK David Robinson won it in 1966 it did not by anymeans always go to to Championship Winner there being no discard for it. And people such as Brian Southcott swapping crews. A owefull argument I still think for no discards in any series.

The City of Plymouth Trophy was awarded to the crew with the least amount of points without a discard. When David Potter won the championship with Doug Brixton, I won the C of P as our discard was better than theirs. I see there was no mention of the C of P in the results. There used to be a Crews Race as well but a separate trophy was given for that.
Who won the 'TONGS' and for what???????

I suppose you won those as well!!
Perhaps you would like to tell us when - and what for?

I did win the Crews Race and the C of P but I never won the TONGS. Lord knows, I tried!

Now this thread may be getting into touchy stuff.
Are the Tongs still presented?

Maybe the tong is ended!

Gurney and I think Ned Sparrow presented the 'Tongs for 'extra curricular activities!! In 84 they were won by a jack russel that had more fun than any of us on the beach at Abersoch. I dont think anyone has won them three years in a row so the trophy should still be presented. Who would have won them this year?

The Tongs were originally presented by the late and great Robert Tricket for 'extra curricular activity'

They were definitely awarded in 2005, I seem to remember a certain young man being stripped naked on the dance floor immediately after the award! But alias I wasn't there this year so can't help you out with any info Barry :)

Wasnt Tricket the first recipient, together with SMYC secretary Jan?

I have done a little further research into the City of Plymouth Trophy.
The last year in which it was awarded to the crew who was not in the championship winning boat was 1971 at Plymouth when Jon Turner crewed for Spud in Philistine. They had finished 2nd to Francis Williams and Dereck Sheffer.
This suggests the discard was introduced to the calculation perhaps in 1972 or 1973.

In regard to the Tongs I always thought they were the creation of a Bognor/Whitstable party which include the late Ned, the Gurn and perhaps Frank Dwyer.

The memory is not what it was, but I seem to recall that Robert Trickett was indeed the first recipient of the Tongs. I also recall that the Jack Russell was presented the trophy to protect the identity of the real winner who might have been asked embarrassing questions by his wife when he got home! Of course, this could all have been a rumour! I forget who the other lucky recipients of the era were - but as I recall, it was a keenly contested award.

Yes AG! With no discards Helen and I might have won the 1963 Champs at Whitstable, at worst we'd have finished 2nd. A couple of years later David Child would have won at Plymouth if no discards had been allowed.

In my other sport of gliding at least nine race days are scheduled in most competitions and no discards are allowed.

Dear Old Man - I can assure you that it still is!

So, who won the trophy? Was it presented? If not, where is it?
