Topic : Scary Stuff?

Come on then - on a scale of 1 to 10, how scared were you all yesterday? Was it a tad spicey?

It was fun on my windsurfer!!! Have totally mastered the art of the waterstart.. if only it would work with a boat - would make capsizing so much more elegant!

You should have seen my pants afterwards, what. Yuk, what. Whiffy, what. You missed out little Lord Dalby of Feckingham-in-the-shire with 12 gauge and cane fly rod, what. How's the deer stalker old bean, what? Toodle-pip.

I sailed some different boats yesterday and learned some stuff:

1) On a cherub when the helm shouts "Back, back, B A A A A C K!" It's too late. Forget the kite and start looking for a nice spot of water to plop into.
2) Unhook before you tack, it's much much quicker.
3) When the helm shouts "It's round the spreader, it's round the spreader, ITS ROUND THE S P R E......" don't put all your weight on the trap, it's not quick and it makes your face bleed.

I was registering an 8 on the pant-o-meter yesterday, before we even rigged.

plaining in to the beach having dropped them main, i.e. on the jib alone

for the first time of my life Pat actually said no when I started putting the kite up, jessie!

No doubt Pat being an experienced sailor with little tp prove this close to Salcombe and Tenby wanted to keep his yot in one piece!

Which begs the question as to HBSC & TB Results!

To quote Mags' text to me before I even got there 'Eeek its windy here'.

Despite it being the first chance for me to helm Snakey 'B' in a Silver Tiller, and Mags first sail of the year, the sight of Chris Lewens mast snapping in the surf as he launched and capsized was nearly enough for me, but the decider was having to wade in neck deep with several others to hold Pat Blake's bow out enough that he could get off safely.

We left the boat rigged on the beach to see how it would be for the second race. Which didn't take long to not happen.

TBYC results on their way to Chris now!
Whilst hurtling downwind yesterday at TBYC - the hastily recruited expert in the front end of my boat - stopped the (entirely reasonable) left a bit - right a bit routine - and came out with "don't look behind you!"
Needless to say we piled it in on the next leg ! Still cannot believe I still have a mast!
Ian MR 3563

Nice to know the experts were bricking it too!

I sailed a Phantom at the Inlands on Sunday at Rutland out by the dam. Very scary indeed. 42 knott gusts

Worst bit was the mile or so beat back to the club house

I retired from racing myself, but half a dozen hardly souls stayed out for the three races !!!

I was crewing on a B14 at Starcross yesterday - full on planing upwind and somewhat hairy downwind, excellent stuff!

Well I was very glad to see Pat and Alex go up into wind and take their main down at the same time as us - didn't feel quite such a wuss at that point, so thank you Pat! Planing back in under jib only was pretty awesome though!
