Topic : Salcombe Advice

Being new to the whole experience of Salcombe, my helm and I were wondering if anyone could enlighten us on what happens on the first day of Salcombe. I know we have to sail the boat over the "other side" and that there might be a practice race but apart from that I'm none the wiser.

Anyone knowledgeable able to offer any advice or do we just turn up !!

Basically drop off boat and trolley to the boat park and slipway at Batson, earlier than mid-afternoon Saturday. Put trailer in trailer park as instructed when you get there. There will be a lot of other people in the same position. You need to rig your boat and persuade some nice person with a motor boat (and SYC may well have a rescue boat doing some shuttles) to take your trolley and cover over to Mill Bay for you, launch boat, put trolley on motor-boat, sail to Mill Bay, find trolley, pull boat up beach, soak up rays of sunshine and start bimbling and doing Merlin natter. I have never been without a lift over though you may end up paying the ferryman in beer tokens.

I can't wait!

We have organised Antony Lofts to become a trolley dolly for the day,I believe that he will be starting at about 12.00 hrs and I am not sure what time he will be finishing.

P.S. there's no official practice race but I will be going out on Saturday to do some unofficial practice as I haven't actually sailed with either of the crews I am using before - my daughter and crew has managed to get her foot run over and is still not fit. You can do this as part of the getting the boat to Mill Bay exercise. Also, particularly if you have a fixed rudder (ask Andy Dalby) the withies at the edge of Batson Creek mark the edge of the dredged channel and there is NO water beyond them at the bottom of the tide - it's low tide that afternoon.

Andrew, spot on - LW is 15.59 and its a 0.8 tide, High Water in the morning is 10.00 with a 5.0 tide.

Aaarrgh. One of the finer Dalby Downham Motoring Moments that was.

Dalby: Do you think there's any water in there?
Downham: Weeelll. Don't really know salcombe and it's a bit breezy and my head isn't working any way.
Dalby: Well I'm going in there - high tide isn't it?
Downham: Not entirely sure, but it can't do any $%^&*($%^&*($%^&*(
Dalby^&*()^&*()

Take a paddle. It can be a bit sheltered in there sometimes.
