Topic : Gunwhales

Hi,

I'm looking for a little advice.

Following a bit of an accident, I have to replace a section of gunwhale on my boat from the bow to the shrouds on the port side

I have found that mine is made up of two pieces: a four sided section of mahogany screwed into the top plank and then a seperate, shaped, rubbing strake screwed into the gunwhale.

Is this the usual arrangement or can I replace the whole lot with a single lenght of suitable wood shaped to the right profile?

Thanks

Steve

You can do it either way. Using separate pieces will keep it original, and probably be easier to do.

Steve,
I did the same a little while back. I was unsure whether to replace as original. I spoke to a timber merchant who said that it would be easier to replace as two.

I did not get round to it though and she is now on ebay! + Pics of the damage.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will take the easy option and rebuild it as is.
