Guys, Really strange request now! I have an Albacore dinghy as well as my Merlin, it is now in need of completely redecking, my usual boat builder is asking huge amounts to do the job and I’m not to confident on doing it myself, does anyone know any cheaper boat builders, I don’t mind travelling. The Albacore isn’t like my Merlin as the decks are relatively flat.

Laurie Smart if you want an awesome job. Jamie Stewart is probably a little less expensive and quite competent.

You'll find that Lawrie Smart will not be a cheaper option for a re-deck job (circa £2k for a Merlin). Problem is that re-decking is a time consuming job for a boatbuilder and they are happy to make their living doing insurance work. Local cabinet maker might be an cheap option provided they have a little marine experience or you can point them in the right direction with the materials to use - see other threads on epoxies and varnish finishes.

Been there is right..... any boat builder will be expensive because of the time, effort, materials and craftsmanship that goes into doing a good job irrespective of age and condition of boat.
I've had this discussion on many ocassion with Laurie & Steve Jeavons where the potential customers are put off by the price given the age and/or condition of their boat. To a professional boat builder this is of no interest they want to provide a first class job WHICH COSTS MONEY!

Russ unfortunatly even a part timer will cost. Having just done the decks of 1781 it is time that costs. The materials on thier own cost me best part of £500.
