Topic : Tufnol

Does anyone know where I can get hold of some tufnol, suitable for reinforcing the decks where the shrouds and lowers go through? I'm in the Leeds/Pontefract/Doncaster area.

I have found this guy very helpful for brass, phosphor bronze, stainless. If he doesn't have it he might know where you can get it.

Or......Pinnel & Bax 01604 592808. I bought some Tufnol off them a while back. Not the cheapest though. I am sure you can locate a cheaper source. Ebay (Buy Now) is a good source.

Call the boys at Winders - they will probably be able to sort you out - and they are in the right neck of the woods

RS components.

plenty of Tufnol stuff and in small quantities but not as small as you might like! But the cost is lowish compared to some things.

You could use 3/16" Alloy plate instead, if its a big area looks very modern if scrubbed with wire wool, or buy some of the turned tuphnol bushes that the more traditional chandlers still sell. The one at Burseledon Bridge, or the one in Maldon Essex, or (best bet.) Jeckells Oulton Broad. (just by the old swing bridge.)

Incidently has anyone ACTUALLY had a problem putting the fittings directly into the deck - most other high pressure fittings seem to survive? Is the tufnol REALLY necessary?

I don't think anyone has tried building a wooden decked deckstepped boat without some form of reinforcement underneath the shroud base. Certainly all of the Turner and Rowsell boats had Tufnol reinforcement, and some later ones carbon.

If your boat is not a low tank boat and is unable to generate the rig tension of the newer boats then the reinforcement is probably unecessary.

However if you are intending to apply the current amount of rig tension, going against the wisdom of the guys who build the boats could be considered a brave move!

Especially for the want of £5 worth of tufnol.

If Tufnol was unavailable PTFE or UHMWPE would be suitable and possibly superior alternatives.
