MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : In need of direction

I am Looking for advice or suggestions from anyone out there in the Marine/Sailing world as to what sort of jobs there are availiable for me.

I am currently in sales but have a technical background in the Motor Industry. I am very into Sailing My Merlin and have done a number of years on Yachts. I spend alot of my spare time renovating boats for other people aswell as myself to what i would consider a pretty good standard.

My biggest obsticle is that i have a mortgage to pay and so can't take too much of a hit on my salary to begin again in a different industry.

I could do with some direction as i am not sure where to look what to do. I am very much open to suggestions and advice and would really apreciate the help.

The only way to make a small fortune out of sailing is to start with a very large one! Better by far to do your job and enjoy your sailing.

Talk to James Ward at www.marineresources.co.uk he's based in Southampton and is a recruitment agent specialising in the marine industry.

I think everyone would like a job doing what we love, i am a car salesman and working 9-6 6 days a week and working every other Sunday kills the family and sailing life, if you find something let me know.

Ive worked in the marine buisenes for the last 33years(lucky me) the downside is like most leisure industry you end up working most weekends when your clients are about! Still could be worse commuting, traffic jams, meetings, egos, more egos, stress, more stress, fiddling expenses, fiddling with secretaries(opps where did that come from?)
Anyway think of all the money you get paid for sitting on your arses with your 2 hour lunches, etc.
One of the good things of being in the marine trade is watching all the bright young things splating their yachts into walls & pontoons usually two weeks after paying for their yachtmaster tickets
Sorry I should of waited untill April 1st when I might of got away with that.
I'd suggest concentrate your referbing of clients boats partime & make money out of it unless your really commited to going the whole way. You will also find that many marine occupations are poorly paid compared to arsebound jobs!
My apoligies to those offended my dog told me to say it!

I like your dogs style Barry! It is true that when things are going well i can earn a good wage but that has not been the case recently. I also spend most of my time out of the office so i am not arse bound! 2hr lunch would be great but i would be lucky to get 30 mins.

Lou, i am registered with marine resources but they never call me and the jobs they have all seem to require experiance in a particular field.

Barry - my dog sits on his arse all day, gets fed, and is the first in the car when we go sailing or on holiday (and he tells me what to do!)

Dog's life?

I have a cat which adopted me in the freezing cold of last winter. I have christened it Riley due to its current adopted lifestyle. It doesn't sit on its arse at all - in fact the usual posture is flat out on the sofa. It shows little gratitude for its luxurious lifestyle and is fussy about food to the point of dementia (mine). Should reincarnation be a possibility I know what I should like to return as. (And all that string to play with on a Merlin!!)

If you are in sales, why don't you literally go and sell yourself to all the marine/boat/sailing/holiday people out there until you find one that you like and likes you? I'm sure that the likes of Beneteau and Princess want people to sell yachts and people like SP systems need people to flog epoxy to chandleries. That way you get to troll round the marine industry whilst demonstrating a transferable skill.

Have spoken to many of the yacht brokers and they all seem to want experiance. Where do get experiance selling Big boats from then?! I have sent letters to the likes of Ecosea and am waiting for a response. It is difficult to actually visit them as i do still have a job which i would like to hold on to till i find another.

How about one of the Marine Engine Suppliers? Volvo springs to mind, I'd suggest The Volvo Race but all those sorts of jobs eat into yottin' time! Phil Crebbin [email protected] might be a good place to ask advice he seems to have cracked it! I sympathise when I was frsh from University tried accountancy found it too exciting I tried the Marine Trade briefly great except fr the lack of cash and the customers! So I went into Shipping bags of cash lots of idle time but even thats gotten busy now! There has to be an answr for you, Tried the Charter boys? Camper & Nicholson etcyou might even get big boat sales experience on the side, or hear's a though Elizabeth Mayer's outfit on Long Island sound, do an "Elizabeth Mayer" google she rescues super yachts like Endeavour. Or photography? We all like piccies of our yots!

Well that stirred a few up! On a serious note crewing on the bigger yachts is becoming quite professional with with the likes of UKSA training many crews this is excellent because they get a good technical grounding with mixed craft experience. The downside is you have to pay them for the privilage! Now it's true that mummy& daddy pay for many of the student but equally many have given up well paid jobs or go out on a limb with the bank. With other jobs its a case of writing letters, banging on doors and geting yourself known, it's probably surprising how much you do actually know marine wise. Dinghy sailors are generally far better talented at sailing than your average yotter so selling to them relays on your knowledge & honesty, remember they might be new to sailing but they are clever enough to make the money to do so. Good luck in your quest despite it's drawbacks the marine industry is better than working for a living! regards Barry. (& jack russel Henry as seen in Cowes harbour launch)
