Topic : Where to add extra strength in an older boat ?

Morning

I've now begun to strip off all the line and fittings taking pictures as a guide when it all goes back :) -

I'm sticking to my plan to sheath the decks in carbon but while I'm at it I may add some material around the transom in an arc to each side of the boat to stiffen up the rear end - keeping in mind I have no fore deck but an ali space frame and a low bow tank where else should I look to add / improve structure on a Rowsell NSM 1 hull?

I'm tempted to sheath all the other internal structural woodwork too to stiffen up the entire thing - I'm not worried about adding too much weight as I can always remove the correctors to compensate.

Thanks

Conor

The only weak point on my Rowsell/Omega NSM would appear around the sidedeck to gunhale join. I have cleaned it under the deck and the hull & epoxy filleted it with a structural mix. This season no problem. If your going to carbon the sidedecks you might consider the weight involved, have you weighed your boat yet? adding it to an already heavy boat won't help. If she is heavy you could strip the top veneer off! but probably better to remove the whole decks, check/reinforce/repair the sub structure then redeck with a lighter 'gaboon or foam ply then use your carbon. It would be a pity to use all that Carbon on old ply for it to fail later.
Just an idea and while your at it check the weight of your centreboard/rudder/hoop etc. regards Barry 3236
