Mags, did you ever get hold of any carbon?
Posted: 28/07/2005 12:10:22 By: Jon |
A while back I decided that if a broken carbon mast were to come on the market, for a very cheap price, this would be 'a sign' that I must undertake the deck-stepping of 3245.
Alan Fuller did offer me a selection of Natt's cast-offs...

Which you didn't take up.
So shortly on e-bay I'll be posting a proctor carbon mast, in kit form, and if I don't sell it I my try out my paper mache skills.

Mending carbon masts is not as easy as everyone seems to think. Biggest problem is the track. You can rebuild the round mast part although that is not simple but rebuilding the track is a devil. For the mast part you need to "squeeze" the repair to get a good carbon/resin matrix - but since the mast is hollow there is nothing to squeeze against. There are ways round it but definitely not a two minute job. The damaged track has to be cut away. Remaking is very tricky. Maybe it is possible to buy carbon track - I havent tried that. Of course the whole repair has to be "cooked" to cure the resin, and that has its complications too.

Get it done professionally! As Hilliair Belloc put it "Lord Finchley tried to mend the Electric Light Himself. It struck him dead: And serve him right! It is the business of the wealthy man To give employment to the artisan".

Has anyone got anything usefule to contribute like "Hey Jon, you can buy mine if you want, please email me"
Lol, I suppose it is Friday. What's all this about chairs and Salcombe?

As the Thompson Paddle seems to have gone for a swim on its own, how about using the broken chair in its place? I am waiting for the guilty party to 'come out' as I want to hear the true story!

about the chair...i think the perkins dog kinda pulled on the chair or something and mike was sitting on it and it broke the chair and he fell on the floor so every one sung who ate all the pies you fat... Something like that, was really funny though

...quite right, natt, (how sweet!) it was the dog, not me...and it was cracked already...and....

Dont use a track? Do what we have done Make carbon mast ,cut the back of mast to take bolt rope of mainsail inside the section .No friction and boy does the main set sweet! Its also lighter and gives a better entry for the air flow .The only thing we have to do is spray silicon on the bolt rope ,now and again.

The mast section I have (Proctor Mk 1)is like that it isn't round, it is alloy mast type section and the carbon dosen't join, there is a form of track in side the slot. technically this should be better for airflow than a round section with a track stuck on the outside.
just needs mending, whole track doesn't need to be replaced or carefully repaired like on a Superspars or chipstow

WHAAAAAAAAA? our home made carbon mast still in one piece after Cowes dinghy week but not still in boat! In it's mk1 mode it's just to bendy, so have reverted to beta minus! ( or need to make new main with 300mm luff round! Carbon mast returning to shed the intention is to stiffen fore & aft from the hounds down. Topmast flicks really well, Have roll of carbon uni, pots of resin just need time. Total cost so far £**

6th overall, DNS,6th,2nd,2nd,rtd,4th. discarded the DNS I know we shoudn't of retired in the 5th race had a mare of a race, the pintle droped out the carbon stock one minute before the start 20 mtrs off the beach so started 4minutes late with the old spare which was like steering with a sponge downwind. Bramblenet showed 30knot gusts, we swam 3 times so enough was enough.
