MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Ebay style auction on the merlin site for unwanted boat bits

Just a thought after sorting my box of bits, I have loads of pullys (bb) and cleats etc, which are not worth putting on the second hand bit of the web but could be very useful to others at a fraction of the new price.
So How about our own web site aution room for sailing related bits only. the class could charge a small % fee for the sale which could be used as a beer fund for the champs or other class related things

What do you think
Dave.

Excellent idea. Are you going to develop the software?

Normally, the thought of a fancy new feature, with lots of technical coding, makes me pleased.....but these days I find I haven't got the time, and things have to be prioritised.

Can we just use the forum for a very basic auction format?

If you are going to list the bits and pieces on an auction site why not just list them on the secondhand site as now? With your phone number there, people can give you a call dicuss the price and if you are so inclined make a donation to the Association. It would save some poor devil a pile of work. Oh and remember to remove the article when you have sold it - pleeeeeeeease

Ok so you have hit two of the current problems, one itum at a time and no pics.
and you have to rely on people taking them off after, which to keep track of will need more time in the long run than using either a small coded pages or a cheap pre witten one.

Well you could use the discussion board. You post pics on a free posting site such as yahoo.

You post a thread here with a link to the pics and a description as well as collection/postage details.

You say when the auction closes

People post bids (all posts are timestamped anyway)

Highest bid when the time is reached wins.

You still have the problem with identifying posters but so do ebay. They have a staff to deal with that and still fail, a bit of software someone writes in their own time will not help.

We could certainly breathe some life into the second hand bits section
What kind of hosting do we have?
These are all open source aution apps from sourceforge, the second best site on the web after www.merlinrocket.co.uk
http://sourceforge.net/projects/everyauction/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpnggpl/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/red2auctionos/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mysqlauction/

The real pain in the ass would be all the enforcement - could cause a lot of s**t between members if somebody stiffs somebody else. Maybe we could start to use ebay and post the links to stuff.

My 2 cents

Jon

I have an idea,

why don't we ask e-bay to create a service for clubs groups and associations, that way we get the power of e-bay - pay-pal - rules etc
e-bat get increased revenue, and of course the association would need to get a revenue share. Our items would be grouped by our association, but also of course on the open e-bay market.

Of course e-bay are hard to talk to about new ideas - I couldn't find a link on thier site where I could send a business development idea.

The MD UK is Douglas McCallum
that is as far as I got.

Why dont we put a code word into the description of any item we flog on ebay like "merlinbits"

That way you could just go to ebay and search for "merlinbits" and as if by magic, the shopkeeper would appear!
