MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Website revamp

Just in case you haven't noticed - we have a 'new look' front page, and quite a few new pages to go with it. I've been working on this for ages now, but this phase makes sure that newcomers to the class have all the information they need to get started.

It should make it easier to find things on the site, as I gradually improve the index and recatalog old files. I can now concentrate on a new photo gallery, and a rigging guide this year.

"AT LAST!" you all cry.
Well don't think you can sit back now - I want you all zooming round the new pages, finding my errors and broken links, the bits which don't make sense and so on. Don't be shy! Post below, or email me, but be sure to include the address of the page so I know which one you are referring to.

Blimey, that was a bit of a shock, thought I'd got the wrong web site for a moment. Looks good though

Looks excellent to me and the need to search for bugs will give me a good excuse for browsing.

Looks excellent I must say. User friendly too. Great job. Still have to find sails for an old Merlin though (don't think that is a bug!!)

I like it a lot

Well done, indeed. Initial shock but very attractive opener and easy to navigate.

Great job Mags, looks much more modern, good advert for the class, much easier to navigate. Will let you know if I find any bugs! Maybe you should have some text about the pic on the home page with James and Vicky and the Wave about the boat being 20 years old and still pretty competitive with a modern rig, but that's a lot of words.

Of course, I musn't make it seem like I did all the work myself - many thanks are due to those who wrote text for me, and advised on content. I had better not list the names, as I might forget someone important, but thanks to everyone who helped.

Brilliant ! you should be very proud, I would not dare to find fault.

The new look website is v. v.swish, however, the second hand boats list seems to be corrupted, also, would it be good to include a link to the second hand boat lists under the 'second hand stuff' heading?

good job on the revamp!

It has been a lot of work for Mags - well worth it!
Well done to all concerned - you know who you are!!!

Twenty-four hours later and still very impressed. Second hand list seems to be working fine so that may be a separate issue.

Sadly, the one thing which the new site throws into stark relief is the one that needs the most work, namely the design guide. Dated, slow to navigate and still no print version. But a really big job.

Whats the matter with the boats list? Is it still bad for you, cos it looks fine to me.

Mags, I found the archive link and useful links page after going to the paperwork link to find insurance companies. Am I missing something on the home page or are you going to add seperate links at a later date?

hi mags!

great new site thanks for all your hard work.

i can't find the boats for sale section either, it doesn't appear on the front page (just before used items) and yes, i do have my specs on this morning

The really remarkable and praiseworthy thing about the MR websites in all incarnations is not just the content, the time that everybody puts into it, the quality etc, but the technical robustness of the site! When GOVUK sites are falling over, my BT Internet is dead dodgy and yes I have 2mgbt broadband www.merlinrocket.co.uk
just works, whoever bought the technical platform should share their secrets!
Like the boat itself, reliable and fast, if only my women were the same!

..just like to second the remarks of the previous speakers.

Many thanks to Mags for the time and concerted effort over many months, even during his recent re-bathrooming of the homestead.

The main page has a heading called "Secondhand Stuff" - and "Boats For Sale" is just under that.......?

I have amended the "paperwork" page - thanks steve. Special prize to you for finding the first error. The pages you found are still under construction and should be hidden.

Since you mention the bathroom, the damn project is still going on, though at least all the plumbing is done - we can wash and wee etc.

Just need a proper floor now...and a cupboard....and a panel on the bath....and some touch-up on the paint....and new lights fitted...and....

Great work and nice surprise, but....
Some of the pics which appear as links on this forum, appear to be part of an archive somewhere, but there doesn't appear to be anyway of getting to them via the main site. Ditto the good pics that appear on the home page. Only mentioned 'cos some have been reet useful helping with rigging/layout etc..

still not appearing! under secondhand stuff i just get

:Equipment for sale:Items wanted

the boats for sale bit was there, but not any more!

(are you conspiring with the missus on this one?)

By: john
BMaxRog - yes, i need to address this as i sort out the archive and technical area etc etc. sorry for the delay, but there's alot of stuff in here!

By: Mags
John, much as your missus would like the money spent on clothes, I can assure you the link is quite static, and I am at a loss to explain why it is hiding itself...

Posted: 04/03/2005 17:27:32
By: Mags
I'm curious, Mags - hope you dont mind me butting in but, as you state, the link is indeed static......

John, what web-browser are you using? Please click on the help and post the name and version i.e. Internet Explorer 6.2.8 blah blah.

Hmm, I wonder - John, are you running advertisement blocking software?

The boats for sale is a link containing the word "adverts" whereas the bits for sale and bits wanted dont have that word.....

By: Jon3389
well spotted!

yes it's back again if i turn off my norton internet security! it's just that link that's blocked, but it never happened with the old site - curious.

ta very much for the help

It's not too curious fortunately, Mags seems to have got rid of a lot of the java script and replaced it with what we anorak wearers call server side stuff.... Your internet security software is not the cleverest in the trade.....

My Norton Internet Security also blocks out the boats for sale link unless I turn it off - in which case it magically appears.

Better layout, great pics and loads of information. One minor complaint - with the final paragraph starting "As the nineties draw to a close.....etc" the class history section does look a few years out of date.

By: Robert Harris
Yup, I have an idea of someone I will recruit to rewrite that page for me!

And I've never heard of 'security' software being that strict before - its always tricky when software is written to detect unwanted words...and then someone finds the home page of scunthorpe council doesnt work...
