Topic : Advice needed - trailer tyres and spinnaker numbers

Hullo experts, please can you tell me:

1) Where to buy tyres for my trailer (can't buy a whole wheel cos they are the ancient 3-stud type), and how to get them fitted.

2) How to remove stick-on numbers from a secondhand spinnaker...and how to remove any residue they might leave.

Thank you!

As to one, any scooter (motorised - Vespa etc)could probably help you, tip get inner tubes fitted too and buy lots of that "fenelec" stuff from the Garage, alternatively junk the trailer! Do see if you can get a spare wheel too!

As to two. Acetone you can buy it in reasonable quantities unless that is you buy your nail polish remover in bulk! An alternate would be International's Polyurethane Varnish Thinners.

On the spinnaker numbers, they are much much easier to peel off when they are quite, if not very, warm.

Don't use No9 thinners!!!

They take forever to evaporate, leaves an nasty oily residue and are totally unsuited to this kind of thing.

Your best bet is to go to you local car paint shop and buy a can of panel wipe. This is better than acetone for this kind of operation as it evaoporates really quickly and doesn't leave a residue behind. It's not as agressive as acetone either.

Also works really well on mylar/kevlar mainsails.

All of the above! we used to use a purpose supplied nasty fluid from Bainbridge but acetone was just as good, a couple of tips though if I may. Be prepared, no don't grab a boy scout. You need to place the sail a clean non absorbant surface an old formica table would be good, you'll need a roll of plain kitchen tissue(some patterns are not acetone proof) & some clean white rag (old Shirt?) try to remove old numbers in a dry state pulling them off in the direction of the thread of the spi cloth,go carefully A to prevent a tear & B to prevent streching the cloth.with the old numbers off you'll probably be left with either just a sticky residue or same plus a colour shadow dont panic its gets worse! Now basically flood the old number area, let it soak a while then soak again, then with the acetone plastic bottle lid carefully work the glue and you'll find it will start to come away looking like gunge? (okay bogies!) weting the kitchen paper with acetone remove gunge. This whole process is pretty messy but don't bottle out, when your pretty well there dose the whole area again & wipe clear with the clean acetone dampened cloth, take outside & allow to air &,dry.
Needless to say the use of mask & gloves is an H&E issue as is doing it in a well ventilated safe zone, which is probably why I used to do it in the middle of the sail loft! Lastly dont use the fluid on or near any bonded only seams.
Question A ATS or towsure? regards Barry
PS Carbon booms finished Mast next.
