Topic : Second hand list scam warnings

I've had a few emails recently from people who have advertised their boats on the list who have been approached by some of the well known scammers more usually associated with Ebay (The Pastor whateverhisnameis from Nigeria for one).

For those not familiar with these scams, if ANYONE approaches you to buy a boat and wants to pay using Western Union don not agree! What happens to the unfortunates that do agree is that the money appears in their account(With Paypal or Nochex anyway, i don't know if it works with banks), the buyer gets their goods and then withdraws their payment which magically disappears from the sellers account.

At the moment these are easy to spot, but they will no doubt get cleverer.

DO NOT SELL YOUR BOAT TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PAY USING WESTERN UNION, ESPECIALLY IF THEY DON'T LIVE IN ENGLAND!!

Another scam is to send the seller a couple of grand too much and ask you to use the excess to make a payment to a bogus shipping agent to cover the cost. According to ebay it can affect bank accounts as well!

Yup, I heard from another potential 'victim' the other day, who had got suspicious about overpayment by foreign buyers.
