Topic : Mast Sections

Please Help, my mast has been wrecked in the dinghy park, my boat snapped her ropes and blew off her trailer. Anyway she is 3190 NSM 1 rigged with a Super Spars mast that snapped just above the ram can anyone tell me what section/model of mast this would be, it is singal skinned with the only internal wall being for the sail track.
Any advice on how to work out what the mast is gratfully accepted.
Many Thanks.

It was a bit windy wasn't it & watch out this tuesday as well. Your mast, measure the fore & aft & side to side and wall thickness dimensions then give superspars a call (or P&B, Speeds, etc) the'll be instantly able to check out what youv'e got, could be one of 2/3 sections. best of luck Barry.

Almost certainly an M3 on that age of boat.

The best bet now would be a Proctor D or Superspars M7 as the M3 is no longer available.

If I have to buy a different section mast will that render my sails useless? or is that just boat builder patter to get me to shell out for new sails? Any thoughts on buying a used mast or is that just to risky as it may have been heavily used on it's former boat?
Cheers now.

In my opiion, if you check over the used mast carefully you should not have a problem, and there would be a few geniune upgrades to carbon I guess.

I think that sails cut for hog stepped masts were fairly easiliy interchangable as the bend charactistics were not all that differant, though i may have to stand corrected on this one!

As for second hand masts, check that it's straight and hasn't got loads of unecessary holes.

Are the insurance company not interested?

The insurance company are waiting for quotes, Speed stated circa £500 for a mast then there is the repair to the hull, I am waiting for the estimate. This is a problem with 25 year old boats, they have little value as the top racers do not want them, yet a 25 year old wooden NSM will cost the same as a 10 year old Canterbury to repair.

Using your old sails on a Proctor D or Beta- or indeed a Superspar M series wont be to much of a problem. You will just have to tune the initial set up to match the luff round cut on your sails,
this applies whether you buy new or secondhand. the variable will be the stiffness/gust responsivness of varying sections. On the cost side how good at DIY are you? as you might consider going direct & buying a unfitted basic tube from Superspar with any fittings you cant re-use from your Proctor (head & heel castings) It's a simple enough job with the right tools & a measure twice cut once approach. Make a note of your time then you'll see where the price comes from!
Best of luck, Old NSM's live on.

I'd echo what barry said, if the rigging off the old mast is useable it's a simple enough job to transfer it over and that is where about £150 of the £500 goes!

I'd be inclined to get them to cut the tube to length and drill the exit holes though as these can be a pain and speeds have the tools to do it properly.
