OULTON BROAD SAILING CLUB OPEN MEETING 2004
Suffolk laid on a perfect summerís day with a moderate if shifty breeze and hot sunshine. 19 Merlins shared Oulton Broad with a healthy fleet of local boats, the racing being cleverly arranged to avoid everyone sailing at once, thus affording the visitors the opportunity of watching the beautiful Waveney One Designs in action.
As usual for this confined venue, good starts and first beats were essential ingredients of ultimate success, any amount of boat speed or prowess after a poor first rounding being of limited use.
The frequent and sudden wind shifts lead many to recall winter games of snakes and ladders, although for many the snakes were dominant.
Reigning Inland Champions Simon Blake and Linton Jenkins confirmed their dominance in these conditions and won the meeting easily with two wins and a second. Behind them no other teams posted three good results, but Richard Whitworth / Anna Blake and Glen Trusswell / Paul Davies each sailed two good races to fill the remaining top three slots.
At the prizegiving petite Commodore Jenny Riley rose to the occasion on her self-built mini-stage and distributed very attractive mugs to the favoured few.
