MERLINS AT SALCOMBE
Mediterranean conditions were the order of the day in Salcombe when the 29 Merlin Rockets arrived for their weekend open meeting on 24th/25th April. The fantastic weather could have meant no wind but both days gave brilliant sunshine and a light and (in typical Salcombe style) shifty easterly F2.
Saturday afternoon’s racing took the fleet through the “Bag” twice with some big snakes and ladders to be lost or gained on each occasion. This race saw several different boats leading at one time or another with Glen Truswell and Paul Davies leading the charge only to get “bagged” leaving them with a seventh place. Other notable contenders who got to the front were Duncan Salmon and Ian Garwood, Simon Blake and Linton Jenkins, and the eventual winners of this race, Chairman Pat Blake and Alex Jackson.
Sunday morning’s race, sailed in a strongly ebbing tide, consisted of a beat to Yalton followed by a series of sausages using marks 1 and 3, running down the estuary on the tide and then tactical beating either side on the way back up. Those that took a gamble to go town side on the first beat made some gains over those on the Mill Bay shore. However, on the second beat, the wind filled in on the Mill Bay side leaving the “townies” struggling to get respectable placings. Having lead at Yalton, Blake and Jenkins were overtaken by Mike and Jane Calvert on the way to Blackrock (no: 1) and never managed to regain the lead, doing the town side beat on the final shortened leg. However, having gained a second place in each race, this was enough for them to win the meeting.
