Steve Nicholson Memorial Trophy 2010

Merlins attend this massive mixed-class event in aid of Asthma UK
A gorgeous sunny day greeted those who braved the less pleasant temperatures for the Steve Nicholson Memorial Race at Northampton. Merlins were well represented with 9 boats taking part, mostly from the Midlands, except for Olly and Carly Turner who hijacked Faithless and made the trek up from Starcross.

The first race got underway in a semi-steady force three blowing diagonally up the lake from the clubhouse. An enormous amount of starboard bias at the gun meant ‘committee boat or bust’ and led to an inevitable general recall. The fleet held back for the second start and the race got going.

Matt Biggs and Ben Hollis got clear at the first mark and disappeared, beaten on the water only by the 505 and doing our PY return no favours as they trounced the Fireball across the line. Further down the fleet things were slightly closer, guest stars Ian Dobson and Matt Mee coming second, and veteran Richard Dee just pipping Rich Adams to 6th place.

The second race was sailed in slightly more wind, with a real bite to it as the temperature dropped. This favoured the Fireball fleet, who were showing no mercy after their annihilation in the first race! Olly and Carly Turner broke clear in this race, winning on corrected time, but a mediocre first result kept them out of the chocolates. Second place went to Tom Stewart and Liam Dempsey, while Matt Biggs and Ben Hollis were languishing in 7th place after being Fireballed for most of the race.

Overall it was a Merlin Benefit, but very very tight! The first three boats were all on 8 points, but Matt and Ben’s win in the first race gave them first place overall, Ian Dobson and Matt Mee came in second and the 505 of Andy Smith and Tim Needham came in third.
