Hunts Vintage Open 2009
A total of 7 vintage Merlins turned out at Hunts S C for the vintage meeting on 2nd May. These ranged from the comparatively “modern” 2972 (Nitro) with some brand new sails, to 6 (Iska), sporting her new 25 foot mast and setting cotton sails. |
A bright & sunny day but with a light & flukey west to south-west wind made course setting difficult for Race Officer Richard Christmas. A total of 3 races were sailed and in all 3 races Ben Marshall (1206) & Nick Crickmore (2972) soon moved well ahead of the chasing boats to claim between them line honours in all three races.
Further down the fleet there were frequent changes in position and at times some quite close racing. The only real excitement was in the second race, when a strong backing puff caused (799) Mervyn Allen to capsize and Nick Crickmore to take on some extra ballast!
And who said vintage boats were for senior yotters, 2605 (Huff & Puff) was well sailed by two 16 year olds Lucia Lachlan-Cope & Emma Houlder.
