Carsington Open 2009
On Sunday 14th June, Carsington Sailing Club welcomed back the Merlin fleet after an absence of 10 years. Sunshine but light winds greeted 13 visitors and 3 home boats for the Midland circuit event. |
The first race saw some close racing, with Tim Male & Rebecca Aldred out in front at the first mark. The lead was subsequently shared by Ian Tinker & Sarah Allen, Tom & Andy Chadfield, and Richard Dee & Scotty, as each took it in turn to sail into holes. Then on the last lap, local knowledge came through as Ian & Sarah pulled out a lead which they held to the finish, with Tim & Rebecca second and Paul & Michelle Keeling coming in third.
Tom & Andy led at the first mark of the second race, followed by Ian & Sarah. As a windshift turned the race into a bit of a procession Tom & Andy ground a reasonable lead, only to be almost caught by Ian & Sarah on the penultimate leg, but they held on to take the gun.
After a break for lunch, the third race, sailed in lighter wind, saw Tom & Andy again lead Ian & Sarah at the first mark and then sail away from the rest of the fleet to secure an easy race victory and the overall event. Paul & Michelle, and Tim & Rebecca had their own private battle, with Paul & Michelle taking third place in this race and third overall, with Tim & Rebecca coming in fourth.
Many thanks to Carsington Sailing Club for hosting the event, which hopefully will be repeated next year.
