Bolton Open 2009
A moderate but high quality bunch of Merlin sailors arrived at Bolton to a blustery North Easterly force 3-4, by a very enthusiastic and welcoming club. Everyone donned their hats and coats and set about rigging whilst mumbling about the cold...a bit of a shock after the tropical weather of Exe and Starcross! |
Race 1 saw Rich Adams & Martin Weatherstone do a bit of a horizon job – leading very confidently from the start. Second place went to Richard Whitworth & Sally Townsend followed closely by Matt Biggs & Rob Kennaugh.
After a lovely lunch, race 2 was started with a couple less boats as the wind really piped up. Whitworth & Sal (frequent Bolton winners) led solidly throughout hotly pursued by Steve Goacher & Andy Tunnicliffe then Dave Winder & Pippa Taylor who recovered rather well from their one millionth caspsize of the season. A special mention should go to Matt Biggs & Rob Kennaugh whose boom snapped in half mid -gybe. Rob said he was fairly ambivalent about the situation so they went to the bar instead.
Race 3 was not quite as breezy as the previous one, but many of the teams wisely decided to spectate from the fantastic bar overlooking the lake. Winder & Pip passed Whitworth & Sal at the windward mark and whizzed away on a fairly enormous gust, putting Whitworth & Sal second then Rich & Mart third (although it got very close at the end!)
Overall, Mr Whitworth & Sal won the trophy back from Winder & Pip in second and Adams & Mart on equal points in third.
A big thanks should go to Bolton Sailing Club for hosting a great event, the rescue boats who retrieved Julian’s trademark orange ‘Porn Star’ hat after a flamboyant capsize and a big thumbs up to everyone who made the effort to travel.
