Shustoke Open 2008
Twenty-five Merlin crews arrived bright and early at a rather soggy Shustoke SC on Sunday 7th Sept for a round of the Silver Tiller series (sponsored by Speed Sails). After a week of rain and a wet morning the skies cleared and OD Peter Scott was able to set his course in a breeze that varied in direction but always around force 3. |
The first race got going after a clean start and the fleet soon split in to two, with Mike & Jane Calvert leading the way home, with Pat & Jilly Blake second, and David Winder & Pippa Taylor third. Race two started in a slightly stronger breeze, and with a number of boats over the line the fleet was recalled and this time under a black flag sequence the fleet made an excellent start. Again the fleet soon became two parts with Mike leading the way home again with another convincing win. In second place was Richard Whitworth & Sally Townend, with Roger Gilbert & James Stewart third.
After an excellent lunch and much chat race three got under-way. Mike Calvert did not have the lead and at one point was fourth behind Richard Whitworth, David Winder and Richard Estaugh. However it did not take long for Mike & Jane to overhaul the leaders and take up their usual place in front to finish the afternoon in style with three out of three wins. Richard & Sally took second and Roger & James third.
Andy Bownes & Harriet Hartshorn were the top Shustoke team with an excellent 13th place despite only being able to sail two races.
All in all a great day was had by all, and following the presentation of prizes by Commodore Bill Gill, Mike Calvert was generous in his thanks to all concerned, for the warm welcome, with a special thanks to the galley for the great food, and (that well known MR sailor) Pete Scott for a job well done as Officer of the Day.
