Midland Mug 2008
The weather was bright and sunny with a westerly force 2 to 3, which helped Race Officer, John Burgoine, and his team set courses to take best advantage of the sailing water.|
Two races were run back-to-back before lunch. The first got away on time with Matt Biggs taking an early lead, though Roger Gilbert got to the front after half an hour, and held on to the finish. Matt was second and Mike Calvert third.
A course change for the second race saw the committee boat end of the line favoured by most for the difficult beat to the first mark close to the north shore. Roger and Andy Davis got away from the rest, but Matt fought back into second place. The close battle continued with Andy getting past Matt and, on the last beat, overtaking Roger to take the gun. Unfortunately Matt had been OCS at the start and Mike took third place.
In the final race Matt pulled away at the start. Roger closed the gap and took the lead on the second lap, and held on to take the trophy. Mike also slipped through into second and Andy was fourth.
