Bithfield Sailing Club hosted the final round of the 2008 Silver Tiller circuit, sponsored by Speed Sails. A good turn out of 36 boats arrived early Sunday morning to be greeted by a good force 4 breeze, perfect sailing conditions albeit a little chilly in the wind.
Race 1 got away first time, just after 11 o clock, the fleet was led to the first mark by Richard Whitworth. Behind Richard there was a battle brewing between Mike Calvert, David Winder, Willy Warren and Taxi. Halfway through the race Richard had built a good lead with Willy and Taxi battling for 2nd. On the last beat Taxi and Willy had closed up on Richard. Richard took the gun Taxi 2nd and Willy 3rd, all finishing with in a couple of seconds of each other.
Race 2 got away after several false starts with only one boat being caught by the black flag. This time it was Taxi's turn to lead the fleet around the course, pulling out a substantial lead to take the gun. Behind, 2nd and 3rd was again being battled between Richard and Willy with Willy eventually taking 2nd and Richard 3rd.
It was all to play for in the final race with any one of three teams in with a chance of taking home the GKN trophy. At the first mark it was Richard round first followed by Jon Gorrige and Rob Kennaugh. Willy was down in 4th place and Taxi in the mid twenties. Richard held on to 1st with Rob winning the battle for 2nd and Jon in 3rd.
Overall a great days sailing with very tight racing right through the fleet and a big thank you to all the competitors who made the effort to attend the final Silver Tiller event for 2008 and also thank you to Speed Sails for sponsoring this seasons Silver Tiller circuit.
