Shustoke Open 2007
The 2007 Silver Tiller started with 33 boats competing at Shustoke. Twenty two clubs were represented from as far away as Blackpool and Fleetwood, Salcombe and Frensham Ponds indicating the fleet will flourish again in 2007. |
Although the clocks were going forward that night by an hour, the bitterly cold northerly wind had caused the season to go back three months. Winds up to a force 3 gave entertaining sailing and caused only one or two to capsize, although its direction meant that the beats had to be short and consequently rounding of windward marks proved interesting. The direction allowed an exhilarating long three-sailed reach the length of the reservoir. Tom Stewart and Liam Dempsey from Northampton Sailing Club put down a marker for the season winning with two straight bullets. The Salcombe pair of Glen Truswell and Paul Davies improved with each race to take second place with 5 points, one point ahead of the third place pairing of Dave Winder and Pippa Tayler. Two points separated the 2nd and 5th boats.
With no recalls, no black flags and only one protest all day, can it be that the Merlins have all made a New Year’s resolution or have they just given them up for Lent?
