Bartley Open 2007
Sunday, 16th September saw 12 Merlin Rockets from 6 Midland clubs gather at Bartley for the sixth Midland Circuit Open Meeting and were welcomed by a brisk south westerly wind.|
The first race was started with the wind gusting to around 20 knots and a close fought race in an increasing breeze was won by Steve & Gill Leney in Carbonator (3639) from Andy & Chris Bownes in The Resurrection (3510) with Tom Chadfield & Andy in Still Not Over (3617) in third and Jim & Peter Hopton in Bah Humbug (3598) coming in fourth. Four boats retired after a variety of incidents and capsizes.
After a good lunch, nine boats came to the start line for the second race which was started in winds gusting over 25 knots. The lead was closely contested between Carbonator, Still Not Over & Steppen Wolf along with The Resurrection until an early capsize took her out of contention. Carbonator gradually drew into the lead despite the best efforts of the chasers and went on to take the gun from Still Not Over in second and Steppen Wolf in third.
With the wind still increasing in strength and the Leneys’ firmly in first place, there were no takers for the third race so the fleet retired to the bar and the prizegiving. Our thanks to Bartley SC for running an excellent event, to the duty & rescue boat crews for looking after the various capsizes and to the catering and bar staff for feeding and watering us.
With two more events to come on the Midland Circuit, ten boats have already gained the four results necessary to qualify and another four just need two more results.
