Whitstable Open 2006
Whitstable Yacht Club hosted its 55th annual Silver Tiller event over the weekend of 1-2 July. 33 boats were greeted by almost perfect Whitstable weather, hot sunshine and easterly breezes that developed into firm sea breeze conditions on both days.|
PRO Nick Finley set good lines and challenging courses which he moved as the wind shifted. The first two races started first time, which must be something of a record for the Merlin fleet, but perhaps they were all keen to get ashore to watch the football. The Warren family led race 1, William crewed by Georgie Corlett taking the bullet from father Alan and Liam Dempsey. Tom Stewart and Chris Downham were third. The wind built for the second race giving spectacular conditions. Tom Stewart made no mistake with David Winder and Jilly Blake second and the new pairing of Simon Blake and Paul Davis in “Rong Number” third.
Sunday morning produced a lighter wind that was patchy and shifty and the first race was a real snakes and ladders affair. Simon Blake made the most of the conditions to win from Tom Stewart and Chris Lewns and Jane Beaumont. The final race was sailed in a firm force 3-4. Glen Truswell and Jim Lowbridge, sailing Jim’s much-modernised “Storm Cloud” won from Tom Stewart and John Bell and Graham Williamson.
Tom Stewart showed great consistency to win the Holden Cup for the weekend and also the Melbourne Cup for the Silver Tiller.
