Upper Thames Weekend 2006
The Merlin Rocket class concluded its 60th Anniversary celebrations at Upper Thames SC over the weekend 9th-10th Sept. There was a record 41 entries, and boats spanning each decade - from Terrapin No36, to state of the art Easy Rollers & Winder Mk2 Tales.
Saturdays racing for the Spade Oak Bowl was run under the class’ handicap system, designed to level the playing field between the modern, classic & vintage boats. Phil Plumtree and Ellie Bremer sailing 1631 Splatter took overall honours with a 1st & 3rd from Dave Winder and Liam Dempsey in 3662, with Will Rainey and Vicki Tarbet 3rd in 3660.
Saturday night was a lively event with dinner in the Marquee for 100 Merlin Rocket sailors past & present, followed by a BIG party in the clubhouse with live music, which was the undoing of some!!
Sundays Silver Tiller event for the Allen Challenge Cup was run in flights with no handicaps. The wind had shifted to the South, which created tricky conditions for race officer Martin Collen, who finally resorted to the Black Flag to keep the fleet in order. Dave Winder and Jilly Blake won the event with 2 first places (discarding a 3rd), from Terry Curtis and Tom Preston sailing 2623 Chuft, also with 2 1st places, but losing out on the discard with a 4th. Mike Stephens & Andy Douglas were 3rd in Luka 3560.
