Hunts Vintage Open 2005
A blustery north-westerly wind greeted the 7 Merlins that turned up for the vintage meeting at Hunts SC on 7 May. The wind continued to freshen as race time approached and Race Officer Tony “Black Flag” Akers, fresh from officiating at the younger Merlins Open at Grafham, set an Olympic course. Both Mervyn Allen (1) and Mike Liggett (235) decided, wisely as it transpired, to see how the newer glued ply boats coped with the conditions.|
By now gusts were at the top end of force 5 and spectacular capsizes were taking place all over the lake. The first to retire was Tim Bury (1066) with gear failure followed by the others, towed in waterlogged. This left only Nick Price from Ranelagh (in the only boat with transom flaps) who, after a couple of capsizes, managed to finish the course.
Following lunch, there was no improvement in the conditions and it was decided to abandon racing.
